Successfully Overcoming Challenges in Bridge Deck Removal
Key requirements from the project:
Removal of existing Reinforced Concrete Bridge Deck and Bankseat:
Bridge Deck 26.1m Wide x 28.3m Long x 1450mm Thick with 13nr x Precast Hollow Deck Beams. Deck cut into 13nr sections for lifting using a 1000 tonne Mobile Crane.
- Diamond Drilling of Lifting Holes and Diamond Wire Access Holes
- Floorsaw Cutting through the deck slab to separate the 13nr Beam Sections Longitudinally
- Over 120m2 of Diamond Wiresaw Cutting to the Bankseat and Abutments
- 28m3 of Hydrodemolition to expose the Bankseat Reinforcement to allow reconstruction.
Scope of Works
Core Cut Ltd have recently successfully completed a complex project involving the removal of an existing Reinforced Concrete Bridge Deck and Bankseat on the A602 Dane End Bridge near Ware in Hertfordshire. Working closely with our long-term client S. Evans & Sons Ltd, our team an innovative approach to deliver the works to a very tight timescale that employed a combination of the comprehensive range of the techniques that we offer, including Diamond Drilling, Floorsaw cutting, Diamond Wiresaw cutting, and Hydrodemolition, to overcome the unique challenges of this project. With a 1000-tonne crane booked on a fixed date to carry out the lifting, a multi-disciplined approach by our team whilst adhering to strict environmental controls ensured a seamless execution whilst working over a live watercourse. A Delicate Task Over a Live Watercourse
One of the project’s most critical aspects was a live watercourse near the construction site. To ensure strict adherence to environmental controls, Corecut Ltd. took necessary precautions to prevent contamination or disruption. The team carefully planned and executed the project to protect the surrounding ecosystem.
Diamond Drilling and Wire Access Holes
Diamond drilling techniques were used to facilitate the removal process to create lifting and wire access holes. Diamond drilling is a precise method that uses diamond-tipped drill bits to cut through tough materials efficiently. By making strategic access points, the team ensured the safe and controlled removal of the bridge deck sections.
Floorsaw Cutting for Precision Separation
To separate 13 beam sections longitudinally, Floorsaw cutting was employed. This technique involved cutting through the deck slab with precision, ensuring that each section could be lifted independently. The skilled operators used their expertise to maintain the bridge’s structural integrity while executing the necessary cuts.
Diamond Wiresaw Cutting for Bankseat and Abutments
Over 120 square meters of diamond Wiresaw cutting was carried out on the bankseat and abutments. Diamond Wiresaw cutting provides a highly efficient and versatile solution for precise cutting through reinforced concrete structures. It allows for controlled and accurate removal, minimising the risk of damage to surrounding areas and structures.
Hydrodemolition for Bankseat Reconstruction
The bankseat reinforcement required exposure for reconstruction, and Hydrodemolition was employed. Hydrodemolition utilises high-pressure water jets to remove deteriorated or damaged concrete, leaving a clean and prepared surface for reconstruction. With 28 cubic meters of Hydrodemolition performed, the team effectively prepared the bankseat for subsequent reconstruction work.
Conclusion
In collaboration with S. Evans & Sons Ltd, Core Cut Ltd, successfully completed the challenging task of removing the reinforced concrete bridge deck and bankseat at the A602 Dane End Bridge. By implementing a multi-disciplined approach, including Diamond Drilling, Floorsaw Cutting, Diamond Wiresaw Cutting, and Hydrodemolition, the team navigated the complexities of the project. Strict adherence to environmental controls and meticulous planning ensured the protection of the live watercourse surrounding the site. The successful execution of this project highlights the expertise and capabilities of Corecut Ltd with S. Evans & Sons Ltd in undertaking complex construction endeavours.
